Staying up on the ever-changing landscape of social media is tiring enough. Add to that the fact that the number of must-use social media sites continues to grow as platforms mature, find their niche and new formats and services arise out of thin air. A good example of this is Vine — we all knew all about Twitter, we knew about YouTube and the importance of video, but many didn’t see Twitter’s release of the 6-second video sharing site coming.

Whether you see them or not, it’s important to adapt and take on more networks, if you can. Not every social site is going to be relevant, not every one will be important to you, but managing the top sites that you deem most worthwhile is bound to be a bit of a juggling act.

Plenty of people take pride in the fact that they manage all 12 of their social accounts individually. Hey, if that’s you and you’re happy like that, knock yourself out. I’m looking for the people that want a bit of a relief and more efficiency. If that describes you, you owe it to yourself to check out one of the great social media management tools that are available out there.

Aging Gracefully

I personally use and recommend Hootsuite. I’ve heard good things about Sprout Social, I’ve been impressed with Radian6, and there are still others. Social media management tools have now had the time to mature into some really solid tools for management, tracking and analysis. What’s great is these usually allow you to plug in all of your favorite social sites into a single dashboard where you can manage, monitor and interact, with ease.

Schedule It

One of my favorite features of some of these great tool is the ability to schedule posts. While there will be the purists who don’t believe in such a thing, if it makes sense to you, go for it. If your content is something that is evergreen and relevant to your business, use the scheduling feature to alleviate the time suck that social media can be.

Social media doesn’t have to be your focus all of the time. In fact, unless you’re a full-time social media marketer, it shouldn’t! Leverage what’s out there to make social work for you, rather than you frantically working for social.
